Saint Florian
Florian was a Roman officer in Lorch (Lauriacum) near Enns in Upper Austria. He died a terrible death on May 4, 304. There he lived in what is now St. Pölten, as a pensioner, and learned what the governor of the Roman Emperor Diocletian was doing in Enns, about 100 km away.
Today Enns is a small town with a beautiful old town center. It is located in the middle of the vast fields of the Upper Austrian foothills of the Alps on a river of the same name.
Aquilinus, the governor, had 40 Christians imprisoned and tortured because of their forbidden faith. Florian heard about it and rushed to Lorch to help them. But he was also caught and arrested when he identified himself as a Christian. Even under torture he did not renounce his faith.
Then his former comrades beat him and broke his shoulder blades with iron. The Romans sentenced him to death by burning him alive. At the torture stake he said, if this were to happen, he would ascend to heaven on the flames. The soldiers were now afraid to burn him and he was killed on the 4th.
In May 304, he fell from a bridge into the Enns with a stone around his neck. Before his execution, Florian prayed for an hour, so that the soldiers were awestruck and afraid to carry out the death sentence. An angry young man eventually pushed him off the bridge and into the river.
The Stift Sankt Florian was later built over his grave.
Eight years after the execution, freedom of religion was guaranteed under Emperor Constantine.

I create the pictures by hand using mixed media on finest handmade paper. Handmade paper is slightly cream-colored and has irregular edges, which give the picture an additional personal and particularly elegant touch. For this reason, the size of the images may vary.
