Image of Saint Sebastian. Religious art for modern homes

Saint Sebastian: martyr and patron saint

Saint Sebastian, a martyr of the early church, is a fascinating figure who plays a special role in art and popular religious piety. His memorial day is celebrated on January 20th. With this picture of modern religious art you can give your favorite place a special flair.

Life and martyrdom

Little is known for certain about Sebastian's life. He is said to have been born in Milan around the year 256 and to have served as a bodyguard for the Roman Emperor Diocletian. As a Christian, he was persecuted and shot to death under Diocletian because of his faith. He was tied to a tree and had archers shoot at him. Since he survived the torture, he was tortured again and finally beaten to death.

Sebastian as a martyr

The depiction of Sebastian's riddled body became an iconic image in Christian art. His sufferings were interpreted as a sign of unshakable faith and made him a popular martyr.

Sebastian as patron saint and protector

Sebastian is invoked as the patron saint against the plague, as he is often depicted in connection with plagues. He is also considered the patron saint of archers, soldiers and shooting fraternities.

St. Sebastian in art

In art, Sebastian is often depicted as a young, beautiful man pierced by arrows. His images often have great emotional power and serve as an expression of faith and suffering.

Motif of the picture

This small work of art in a limited edition of 6 pieces tells a big story. Sebastian is depicted in his ordeal as a young man, sandwiched between two walls that evoke the two worlds he was caught between. However, he still stands firmly on his feet and remains upright despite his injuries.

The arrows are embedded in his body, but he shows no signs of pain and looks less like an injury and more like a sign of infinite strength. They symbolize the temptations and suffering that every person is exposed to and the confidence that there is hope and strength even in the most difficult moments of life. The room in which the picture hangs becomes a place of peace and strength.

Attributes: Arrows, bows, palm branches (symbols of martyrdom), sometimes a city wall or a tree

Patronages:

Against the plague
Patron saint of archers
Patron saint of soldiers
Patron saint of the shooting brotherhoods

Memorial Day: January 20th

Note: The dates of Saint Sebastian's life are not clearly documented and vary depending on the source. The data given here is a common assumption.

Material

Production, design and materials

I create the pictures by hand using mixed media on finest handmade paper. Handmade paper is slightly cream-colored and has irregular edges, which give the picture an additional personal and particularly elegant touch. For this reason, the size of the images may vary. The basic size is A4, i.e. 21 cm x 29,7 cm = approx. 8.3 in x 11,7 in

The motif in red is made from real, hand-made document ink. The digital elements (characters) are applied with conventional printer ink.

Every image is unique. My specially developed techniques allow the creation of similar, but never identical, works. You are holding a truly unique piece in your hand. I sign the sheets by hand on the back (pencil, initialed: WR for Wonnereich, year). A certificate card with information about the materials is included.
